Just my luck that none of the snack machines around here have been restocked yet. I had to go to the convenience store next door where I was forced to purchase a couple of candy bars and a large bottle of water due to my personal policy of not charging less than five dollars on my debit card. Once I get back to my classroom, I tear one of the candy bars open. I lean over my desk with my back to the door in an effort to hide my indulgence from anyone who would walk by. I take a huge bite, relishing the chocolaty goodness I don’t allow often.

My whole body relaxes into the sensations of the sweetness of nougat covered in chocolate and the crunch of the peanuts. I don’t even finish swallowing the whole mouthful before I take another bite, allowing my eyes to roll back at how unbelievably delicious this rare treat is.

Mom didn’t allow processed sugars while I grew up. Therefore, I internalized candy as metaphorical forbidden fruit, so the illicit pleasure of consuming the occasional candy bar followed me as I became an adult. I always feel like I’m getting away with some serious crime when I eat one, which is usually about once or twice a year, but they have the tendency to chill me out. I have a feeling I’ll be upping my allowance of sweets in the coming months.

“So… I just got my ass reamed by Regina,” Felicity says from right behind me, surprising me so much, I yelp and almost choke on a peanut. “For something I didn’t even do.”

I nod, covering my mouth so I don’t waste the chocolate by spraying my desk with it, trying to swallow as quickly as I can. Felicity leans on my desk next to me, crossing her arms in front of her.

She nudges me with her shoulder. “I’m assuming from your nod that she hit you up first?”

“Are you saying you didn’t tell Mason?” I ask, shoving another small bite into my mouth.

“I did not, and because I didn’t know she came here first, I covered for you.”

I chew slowly and swallow. “Thanks, but you didn’t need to cover for me even if she hadn’t been here first.” I take a second lick the chocolate off my finger. “I haven’t had time to talk to the man, and I explained that to her.”

“Yeah,” she chuckles, “she was pretty pissed when she approached me. I’m guessing it was because of one of your sweetly-delivered ass whoopins.”

I lick another finger clean. “I just nicely pointed out that she should have made it clear that rearranging the assignments was supposed to remain a secret, and since so many people on staff are aware of my successful history teaching the classes, it was absurd of her to think Mason wouldn’t find out from the multitude of people who know the truth.”

She smiles, adding, “It seems she is worried that we will lose the donation.”

I nod, pumping some hand sanitizer into my hand.
